SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
Age 65 or older;
Blind; or
Disabled.
If you are applying for SSI, you can complete a large part of your application by visiting our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You also can call us toll-free at (866) 690-1947 to ask for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
Parents or guardians usually can apply for blind or disabled children under age 18. In some cases, other third parties can apply for children.
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed.
Please bring:
- Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
- Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
- Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
- Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status; and
- Your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number. If you are approved for SSI, you must receive your

Opening Up a MySocialSecurity Account

SSI
SSI benefits also are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial limits. People who have worked long enough may also be able to receive Social Security disability or retirement benefits as well as SSI.

Thank you, I appreciate you more than you know. I have made an account to help speed up the communication process. I am usually a patient man, however the long wait is not the thing that's hard to take, it's having the call dropped over and over.
I have been trying to get hold of someone by phone and I still can not get an appointment to come in and talk to anybody.
Trying to talk to someone about how to do a name change on a SS card. Getting a busy signal. No helpful info online.
I have been trying to get through to you on your phone number. I have called twice and it starts out where I'm on hold for about 10 minutes then it sounds like someone is going to answer the phone and start talking but instead is just static for 5minutes and then I'm cut off. When I call back same thing happens all over again. How on earth do you expect anyone to get through to you with this type of system? Does anyone get through? What should I do next? what do you suggest? Will you fix this system so tax paying, law abiding individuals can get through to talk to a person?
I've phoned several time necessitating going through the long menu only to have the representative 1. not be able to hear me (they hang up), 2. a loud re-occurring squelch and buzz where conversation is intermittently cut off, 3. Hearing someone elses cross talk while on hold, making out some of what should be privileged conversation. I think these issues are due to the VOIP or other system you are using to enable people to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic.
I just got out of prison and when I went in someone stole my social security card I have not even got my stimulus checks and there is a name on my SSN that I have no clue who it is
I called three times las week. never got through. one time on phone hold 12 minutes then your end disconected. VERY frustrating !!!! I have an imperative medicare issue and can't get a hold of anyone.
I can't reach your office. I'm on hold for appr. 15 minutes and then it hangs up. I tried 3 times. One time an employee finally answered and took my SS # then hung up. Of course he never called me back, so I tried again with the same results on hold then got hung up on. This is a terrible system you have.
