SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
Age 65 or older;
If you are applying for SSI, you can complete a large part of your application by visiting our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You also can call us toll-free at 866-338-4115 to ask for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
Parents or guardians usually can apply for blind or disabled children under age 18. In some cases, other third parties can apply for children.
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed.
- Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
- Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
- Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
- Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status; and
- Your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number. If you are approved for SSI, you must receive your
payments electronically. Payments may be made via direct deposit, the Direct Express¬ģ card program or an Electronic Transfer Account. For more information, visit www.GoDirect.org.

I filed for a replacement card for my son and daughter.The replacement card came back but my son passport was missing up till date. I have called the office multiple times and complain about it but no one has called me back despite taking may information and address.
I applied for Social Security 2 years ago at this office. I filled out all my information and was told everything looked okay and that they had everything. They told me to wait 10 days and it will be approved, then when I went into my account to check the progress,the status went from processing to please apply again. I must've made 20-30 calls, held on the line for hours on end, only to be hung up on over and over.
I requested a SS card for my daughter 4 weeks ago. I dropped off the required documents with the request form as stated in the instructions and I still havenít heard anything back. Itís impossible to contact this office and talk with someone live. Horrible customer service experience.

how are we supposed to take of work to make these appointments? we clearly need the assistance the last thing we can do is take off work.
I have made 3 trips to this office, each time arriving before the doors opened. There has been a line to get in. The office has twice opened slightly early to let people inside. The line continues as you wait to check in (with a person) who takes your information and assigns you to someone to deal with your issue. The line moved fairly quickly each time. The employees who dealt with us were helpful and pleasant. Arriving at about 8:30, we were finished and out after slightly more than an hour.
It is a pain to spend one hour on the phone just to receive the direct phone number of Lanham location plus the number was the wrong one. Please have a direct line for easy access. Public service does not have to be that hard, taxpayer deserve better, we don't have to take a day off to get something done at social security service.
It would be helpful, if the local office located in Seabrook-Lanham, Maryland had a local phone number listed, so that anyone could call directly to that office to discuss social security related matters without having to call the listed 800 number provided. Please consider providing local phone numbers for all social security office within the metropolitan Washington-Baltimore region. Regards, Castor D. Chasten....
